BEHDINAN – HPG Press Center stated the following regarding the guerrilla who was martyred in the Kandıra Prison:
“Our comrade Azad Çewlik was martyred while he was a prisoner in the hands of the Turkish state in Kocaeli’s Kandıra Dungeon on July 3, 2019. How our comrade Azad was martyred was investigated and tried to be clarified. According to the results we reached; Our comrade Azad was murdered by the brutal torture of the enemy while he was held captive by the Turkish state. The autopsy examination and the statements of those who saw his body confirm this. The murder and martyrdom of a comrade who was held captive by the Turkish state in this way is against both the law of the Turkish state, the international laws to which the Turkish state is bound, the law of war and the morality of humanity. Killing an unarmed and defenseless freedom fighter alone in a cell is also a great folly.
Our comrade Azad, an Apoist self-defense militant, became a relentless resistance fighter both during the active struggle and during his time in the dungeon. He was a bodyguard who devoted himself to the freedom struggle of our people. Our comrade Azad, who did not compromise his militancy stance under all circumstances, remained loyal to the PKK’s line of resistance.
We express our condolences to all our patriotic people of Çewlik and Kurdistan, especially to the precious family of our comrade Azad, who resisted until the end against the enemy at the expense of his martyrdom. In the person of our comrade Azad, we promise to avenge all our martyrs and not to leave their blood on the ground.

Our comrade Azad was born in a patriotic family in Solhan district of Çewlik. He grew up with Kurdistani values due to his family being patriotic. It has taken its basic shape by acquiring the characteristics of laborer, hardworking and able to stand on its own feet. The genocide policy carried out on our people has caused our comrade Azad to go on a quest. He participated in revolutionary and patriotic youth work with his sympathy for our movement. On this occasion, he had the opportunity to get to know Rêber Apo and our Kurdistan Freedom Movement better. With this level of awareness he has captured, he has begun to sympathize with the PKK, which is the name of the re-existence of Kurdistan’s core values. The fact that he joined the guerrilla ranks from his close circle in 2013 caused our comrade Azad to come to a conclusion on how to fight. Our comrade Azad has deepened his concentrations and searches during this time, and has reached a certain level of resolution by resolving his contradictions with the system day by day. He saw that the invading Turkish state continued its genocidal policies against our people despite all the efforts of our Leader and our Movement and believed that this genocidal mentality must be fought against. Comrade Azad has come to the conclusion that the attitude of the invading Turkish state and its fascist regimes can only be measured by their approach to Rêber Apo, the name of our existence and struggle. He believed that it was impossible and meaningless to achieve peace without obtaining the physical freedom of Rêber Apo. Our comrade Azad believed that the physical freedom and ideology of Rêber Apo will be the criterion for all the peoples of the Middle East, especially our ancient people, to live together in freedom and peace. On this basis, our comrade Azad joined the guerrilla ranks on February 15, which our people defined as the ‘Black Day’, in order to personally respond to both the conspiracy and the invaders in 2015. Our comrade Azad, whose participation coincided with this date, determined the line of struggle with great determination from the first day. Our comrade Azad started his basic education in Medya Defense Areas, which are free living spaces, and participated in life and education with great love and tempo. Our comrade Azad fought as if he rebelled against the characteristics he acquired from the society and the system. Our comrade Azad, who takes a correct participation and line revolutionism as a basis, has displayed an exemplary stance. It has tried to create the determination of our Leader, “climbing from dwarfism to greatness”, with the understanding of being an answer to every moment. Our comrade Azad, who sees individual inadequacies as the main obstacle to success, has tried to overcome his deficiencies and become a solution power with his practice and understanding of struggle. Our comrade Azad, who always keeps the bar high, suggested to move to Hêzên Taybet to be more worthy and close to Rêber Apo and our martyrs. He was accepted into this study for his unaccountable participation and militant stance. Our comrade Azad, who is well aware that being the maintainer and follower of the Zîlans’ self-defeating line is only possible by melting himself dirham, demonstrated a practice worthy of this line. He tried to do the best he could to become a self-sacrificing militant of Rêber Apo and was dedicated to freedom by organizing himself in every cell. Expressing his late participation as a great misfortune, Comrade Azad has brought to the awareness that the obstacles put in front of those trying to reach our Movement can only be overcome by the system with great organization. He believed that the effective conduct of the Revolutionary People’s War could only be achieved through this organization. For this reason, he realized that organizing the society was only possible with the leadership of the self-sacrificing staff and militants formed by the ideology of Rêber Apo. Our comrade Azad, who equipped himself with ideology and military issues and acted in accordance with the spirit of the period, became a competent guerrilla by developing his skills, initiative and decisions on this basis. Our comrade Azad, whose essence and word is one, has always made our Leader’s ideology and self-sacrificing life a touchstone. He has won the love and appreciation of all his comrades with his enthusiastic, laboring and sincere participation in life. Our comrade Azad has always enriched his comrades by participating in life communally and collectively, working and laboring more. For this reason, he realized that organizing the society was only possible with the leadership of the self-sacrificing staff and militants formed by the ideology of Rêber Apo. Our comrade Azad, who equipped himself with ideology and military issues and acted in accordance with the spirit of the period, became a competent guerrilla by developing his skills, initiative and decisions on this basis.
Our comrade Azad, who understands quickly and wants to respond to the historical process by immediately putting what he understands into practice, has gone to the metropolises of Turkey for some critical studies on this basis. During this period of his duty, he was unfortunately captured by the enemy. Our comrade Azad, who adhered to the line of resistance our party PKK developed in Amed Dungeon under the leadership of Mazlum Doğan, Dörtler, Hayri Durmuş, Kemal Pir, Akif Yılmaz and Ali Çiçek, did not compromise on his stance of self-sacrifice despite all the torture and pressure of the enemy. Our comrade Azad, who resisted with the smallest means at his disposal with the belief that resistance will definitely bring victory, did not bow down to the enemy for a single moment. Realizing that our comrade cannot break the militant stance in any way, the genocidal Turkish state has increased the dosage of torture against our comrade Azad every time.
On July 3, 2019, our comrade Azad, who was attacked by the enemy while he was in the Kandıra Dungeon, was brutally tortured and murdered. Our comrade Azad, who did not compromise on the line of sacrifice even under all kinds of difficult conditions, reached martyrdom by resisting with a stance equal to our tradition of struggle. As his comrades, we promise that, in the person of our comrade Azad Çewlik, we will stick to the memories of all our martyrs and will definitely achieve their goals.”
