Haki Karer was one of them. One who fully committed himself to the fight for freedom and even though he wasn’t a Kurd himself, he fought for the freedom of Kurdish society. To understand the value of the Şehîds it is important to understand the martyrdom of Heval Haki Karer.
His martyrdom produced many truths. Heval Haki Karer fell Şehîd on May 18, 1977 and was the first Şehîd to have a major impact on the movement. The fascist forces in Turkey knew this and planned to commit a massacre by murdering Heval Haki Karer. After the martyrdom among the Hevals became known, many became very emotional and wanted to avenge him. If the chairman had not been there at that moment, that would have happened and the movement would have ended.
Heval Haki’s body was taken to the Dilok Hospital, the Hevals wanted to take it but the enemy wouldn’t let them. If Rêber APO had not intervened, there would have been a massacre. The martyrdom of Heval Haki put the movement in a very serious situation, it was clear that it was either “this far and no further” or “this far and certainly further”. Rêber APO said “Next!” but for the “what next” preparations had to be made and new steps had to be taken. With his caution and foresight, Rêber APO maneuvered the movement out of this dangerous and critical situation.
The assassination of Heval Haki by the Stêrka Sor group in Dîlok was planned and not an accident. Stêrka Sor itself was a small group that can be called a group of agents, this group was set up by Kurds, left-wing groups in Turkey, the KDP, among others, to prevent the spread of the PKK. This group murdered Haki Karer and the KDP, THKO and some of the THKP-C were involved in this murder.
Why was Haki Karer murdered? Because Haki Karer was a Turk who campaigned for Kurdistan and the Kurds and the Turkish state suffered serious setbacks through his work. With Haki Karer’s fight, many Turkish young people joined the movement, and the state didn’t like that. With his work, the alliance between the Turkish population and the Kurdish population was strengthened and the death of the Turkish state was prepared. That’s why the Turkish state struck and used a group that was mainly organized by Kurds to use this for its propaganda. “Look, Haki Karer worked for the Kurds, now the Kurds have murdered him!” In this way, the state wanted to prevent more Turkish youth from joining and destroying the alliance between Turkish and Kurdish society. This murder was one of many conspiracies carried out against the movement and against Rêber APO and revealed many truths in itself.
The group, which was still small at the time and initiated the preparations for Kurdistan’s freedom struggle and later the PKK’s struggle, was unarmed. It was an ideological group that up to that point had not been keen on armed struggle. But with the murder of Haki Karer, it became clear that the group must arm themselves to defend themselves. If they had not armed themselves, they could not have physically survived. This truth has brought out the martyrdom of Heval Haki very clearly.
With his martyrdom, the question of self-defence, the question of how the struggle continues, came onto the agenda for the movement. If the movement had not analyzed and understood what was happening in this situation, it could not have taken any further steps and, above all, it could not have continued. To date, the movement has seen many such situations where the question arose, continue and if so how? But Rêber APO always said “keep going” and initiated new steps. The martyrdom of Heval Haki Karer thus became the cause of a great struggle and organization. It became the line of the PKK, the standard of the PKK. With the lesson learned from his martyrdom, every Şehîd became a reason to keep fighting, to increase the struggle and the organization. This was another truth that revealed the martyrdom of Heval Haki and is still the driving force of the PKK today.
Rêber APO made the martyrdom of Heval Haki the basis of the organization and the PKK and developed this line. Rêber APO made sure that Haki Karer lives on with the PKK and said: “Haki Karer is the PKK, otherwise there is no PKK. Haki Karer, the PKK is his mentality and style.”
This is how Rêber APO created the value of immortality within the movement and ensured the survival of Heval Haki Karer with the PKK. In order to understand the PKK, this must first of all be understood well. The fallen are the reason to strengthen the fight and the organization, everything else is not the PKK. Rêber APO developed this with his solidarity and his Hevaltî and made it clear on this basis with his attitude towards the fallen. That became the line of the PKK, the value, the law.
