MEXMUR – The Iraqi army has been trying to suffocate Maxmur with wire and towers since May 20. As the resistance of the Maxmur people continued on the third day, military activity escalated. According to the information received, the Baqirtê town road to Maxmur was completely closed to departures and arrivals. While new military reinforcements were being made in the region, ditches were started to be dug by deploying ladles all over the camp.
On the morning of May 20, the Iraqi army, with a significant military and police force, took action to surround the Maxmur refugee camp with wire structures and towers. All the entrances and exits of the camp, where around 12 thousand refugees live, have been closed by the Iraqi army. There are many seriously ill patients in the camp. The siege endanger the lives of the people of the camp.
The Maxmur camp has already been under a heavy embargo by the KDP since July 17, 2019. The people of the camp are not allowed to enter the cities of Southern Kurdistan and to enter the camp for basic needs from outside. Many people have lost their lives due to this embargo.
