NEWS CENTER – Kurdistan Women’s Associations (KJK) in a written statement, one of the leading Marxist-Feminist women Prof. Maria Mies recalled.

The announcement of KJK is as follows:

“It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of the Marxist-feminist thinker and activist Maria Mies. For the Kurdish women’s movement, the works of Maria Mies were a source that made a major contribution to promoting women’s perspectives in a scientific and historical context. Maria Mies was a staunch feminist of Marxist theory and practice. However, in the development of the 90s she was able to muster flexibility, to distance herself clearly from any form of dogma and to devote herself to the special topics and challenges of the century.

She is undoubtedly one of the leading women in eco-feminism. Exposing their criticism of neo-liberalism and globalized capitalism from an eco-feminist point of view and countering it with alternatives was a source of empowerment for struggling women. And so, among other things, she was also very involved in the development of civil society organizations.

At the beginning of the year 2000, the Kurdish women’s movement entered into a dialogue with Maria Mies in order to get to know her, to discuss her, to trace her connections and to make her aware of the Kurdish women’s revolution. With great interest, Maria Mies tried to understand what is special about the Kurdish women’s movement. And so she saw the Kurdish women’s revolution in Rojava as a new source of hope at a time when she had increasingly developed a critical attitude towards women’s organizations in Germany and Europe.

We are happy to say that Maria Mies was able to experience a women’s revolution of the 21st century in Kurdistan while she was still in good health. And the work was also created thanks to such great women as Maria Mies.

The Kurdish pioneer Abdullah Öcalan also used the works of Maria Mies in his writings as the source of his theories of women’s history and the colonization of women – and she knew about it, his books found their way to her. Maria Mies is therefore a name that stands for great analysis, criticism and alternatives. We remember her with great respect and she will live on in our fight for the freedom of women and society.”
