MERSIN – Life defenders protested the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant project with a march. Under the leadership of the Mersin Anti-Nuclear Platform (NKP), representatives of many environmental organizations and political parties set out to protest the nuclear fuel rods to be brought to the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. The bus, which included the life defenders who wanted to go to the point where the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant project was built, was stopped 5 times by the gendarmerie on the grounds of identity check along the way.
The defenders of life standing near the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant project got off the bus and marched with a banner reading “Take your fuel and go”. After the short march, the crowd, who wanted to carry out the protest action called the “human chain against the nuclear power plant”, was stopped by the soldiers and the gendarmerie.
MANY DETENTIONS
While life defenders reacted to the gendarmerie’s blocking attempt, many people, including the Turkish Workers’ Party (TIP) Mersin parliamentary candidate Hakan Güneş, were battered and detained. Life defenders started a sit-in for the release of the detainees. Those detained after the sit-in were released.
