LONDON – Yesterday the youth from TCS and Tekojin came together with the Kurdish society’s in Queen Mary and Goldsmiths University of London in honour of Mehmet Aksoy (Firaz Dag). As it was Mehmet’s birthday students and community members came together at the university Mehmet Aksoy studied at (Queen Mary University), where they watched a short video about his time in Rojava and his friends who spoke about their memories with him.

In the morning TCS and Tekojin youth (who are part of the London Sehid Diraz Dag Youth Commune) alongside other students visited Mehmets grave with Mehmets family and payed their respects. The conversations with Sehid Firaz Dag’s mother inspired the youth to reflect on their dedication and strengthen their revolutionary spirit.

The tribute began with 1 minute of silence for all the martyrs that fell in this struggle. Students gave speeches about Mehmet being a student at Queen Mary University, loving his people as a strong welatparez and heval, and his work in London as he advocated for women’s right, democracy and freedom for all.

After the short video tribute about Mehmet’s time in Rojava, speeches continued:

The tribute then continued with a member for TCS who spoke about Mehmet’s time in the Kurdish community centre and his continued role in the mind and hearts of the Kurdish community in London. The youth also spoke about the şehîd Firaz Dag youth commune and how they named it after Mehmet to continue the legacy he has left behind: the spirit of resistance, his willpower, and the love for his people.

Later, Mehmet’s friends spoke more about his love and attachment to the revolution. His longtime friend, Mark, then went on and read a letter from a YPJ general who paid tributes and remembered Sehid Firaz Dag through her words.

The event concluded with a member of tekojin who stated the following:

“Students, youth, and especially young women, need to organize themselves in order to continue the legacy of Şehîd Firaz Dag. Mehmet says the only way is constant struggle and constant victory… and the only way we can struggle and be victorious is through organization. We must stand as one, and we must bring our community together. The youth is the vanguard of the revolution. Şehîd  Firaz Dag understood this very well; he followed the footsteps of the Şehîds who came before him. He aimed to make his struggle bigger. We have to also step into our roles as vanguards and live the legacy that mehmet imagined for us”
