PISA – Since yesterday, December 1st, students and internationalist activists have occupied the University of Pisa to express their solidarity with Rojava and the freedom struggle in Kurdistan. Since then, activists have been taking part in ongoing campaigns at the university.
Our news agency received the following statement from the occupied university:
“Since the night of November 20, the Turkish army has repeatedly bombed hundreds of Kurdish areas in northeastern Syria and northern Iraq, killing civilians and damaging vital infrastructure, hospitals and food silos. The main target of the attacks was the Rojava area on the north-eastern border of Syria.
These attacks have been carried out in violation of international law, on the territory of sovereign states and without their consent, and have been aimed at the same Kurdish populations who have played an essential role in repelling the so-called “Islamic State” in recent years, and thereby by the international community were supported (remember the great solidarity for the city of Kobane, which has been under siege for 134 days).
The University of Pisa strongly condemns these attacks, expresses its solidarity with the affected Kurdish communities, calls for the cessation of all military operations in the region and calls for preventing a dangerous escalation: instead, a process of real pacification of the region must be launched, on which everyone involved is involved.”
In the following video, the activists shouted together in Italian: “From the Kurdish mountains to our cities, women, life, freedom!”
From the occupied university in Pisa, dozens of people made their way to the Leaning Tower of Pisa in another solidarity action today, December 2nd.
The activists explained their action in front of the tourism magnet:
“By occupying the university, we wanted to show the city that we were willing to mobilize against the Turkish attacks. With this action in front of one of the most famous and most visited places in the world, we want to spread our message of solidarity internationally.
We support the Kurdish society and the revolution in Rojava, we will continue to mobilize to defend the possibility of another way of life and to organize the society.
Day X is now, it’s time to act to be the thorns of the revolutionary rose born in the desert!”
A video of the action will follow…
