NEWS CENTER – On november 10, the peoples of Abya Yala commemorated the World Human Rights Day, an important date to call for dialogue and negotiation as a way out of the social and armed conflict that the peoples of the Middle East are experiencing today; More than 200 organizations and individuals from Abya Yala are reaching out in solidarity and rejection against the Turkish state’s war on the Kurdish people.
Latin America asks governments to demand that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Turkey, immediately stop the genocidal war and prohibit the use of weapons against the Kurdish people in Rojava and Kobane.
Below we publish the appeal of organizations and individuals from Latin America:
Urgent call for the international community
The Turkish government has been bombarding the autonomous region of Northeast Syria since November 19 with flimsy justifications and lies. Warplanes, drones and artillery are used against the areas around the cities of Derik, Qamishlo, Hesekê, Deir-ezZor, Minbic and Kobanê. More than 300 artillery shells rained down around the city of Afrin, which Turkey has illegally occupied since 2018. Without the acquiescence of Russia, the United States and Germany, Turkey would not be able to carry out its attacks. Critical infrastructure is destroyed on purpose: airstrikes and artillery fire on schools, clinics, grain elevators, gas stations, and oil fields. This is a war against humanity.
People can no longer mentally bear the situation of permanent threat. You can no longer live in constant fear. A normal life has not been possible for a long time. More than 40 people have already been killed since the attacks began in Syria’s northeastern autonomous region, including at least eleven civilians. Several people were injured. In Kobanê, the newly built Covid hospital, painstakingly built with donations from Germany, and a rural health center were completely destroyed.
We, who support the development of the health system, the projects of the women’s movement and civil society in Northeast Syria in political, financial and personnel terms, condemn the attack by the Turkish government on Northeast Syria and the autonomous region of Kurdistan-Iraq, which violates international law.
We condemn the silence of the Latin American countries in the face of this illegal attack by the Turkish state against the Kurds in Syria and Iraq.
Therefore, we call on Latin American countries to immediately intervene with Turkey and the UN to end the war of aggression and allow access for humanitarian aid in northeast Syria. Like the countries that condemn Russia’s violation of international law in Ukraine, they must condemn Turkey’s war of aggression against the Kurdish people in Syria and northern Iraq.
We ask for signatures to support the Kurdish people and to denounce crimes against humanity:
The signatories of this call, human rights organizations, social movements, academics, artists, we call on all governments, political parties, and international organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean to:
- Being part of an international delegation to go to the Kurdish regions of Syria and Iraq, conduct research there on the chemical weapons used by the Turkish state against civilians. (the Kurdish people);
- Demand that international organizations such as the OPCW, Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, fulfill their functions. And ask the UN to carry out an investigation on this issue.
- Urge the opening of a dialogue table between the Turkish government and the legitimate representatives of the Kurdish people to initiate a lasting and sustainable peace process over time.}
- Many civilian areas were targeted by Turkish attacks in Rojava in northern and eastern Syria. Once again, civilian infrastructure facilities such as wheat warehouses, water tanks, power stations, and hospitals were destroyed. This goes against international human rights law. It is still a war crime. States, political parties and international human rights organizations must take a position on this issue.
- We address the States and the international community in general, so that they articulate all the mechanisms at their disposal that allow the clarification of the truth and justice in the face of crimes against humanity committed by the Turkish State against the Kurdish people.
