NEWS CENTER – The Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) of the Council of Europe announced a temporary visit to Turkey between 20-29 September 2022 with a delegation.
Stating that the main purpose of the visit is to examine the treatment and detention conditions of foreign nationals detained under the foreigners’ legislation and the procedures applied to them in the context of their deportation, the CPT said, anonymously, to examine the treatment and detention conditions of four prisoners in İmralı F Type High Security Prison. Nor did he say he was leaving. “Special attention was paid to the social activities offered to prisoners and their relations with the outside world,” the statement said.
During the visit, Turkish Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu said that he had consulted with the Head of Migration Management, Savaş Ünlü, and senior officials of the Ministries of Interior, Justice and Foreign Affairs, on the implementation of the CPT’s long-standing recommendations regarding İmralı Prison.
At the end of the visit, the CPT said that the delegation presented its preliminary observations to the Turkish authorities.
CPT, the only international organization that can visit prisons in 46 Council of Europe (EC) member countries without the permission of the interlocutor governments, has sent a delegation to Imrali 8 times since 1999 and only three times in the last 10 years. The last time a six-person CPT delegation stopped by Imrali was between 6-17 May 2019.
