TUNISIA – The 3rd World Women’s Conference for grassroots women, with female delegations from 30 countries of the Middle East, Africa and Europe, is hosted in Tunisia from 3 to 10 September. During the third day of the conference, workshops shed light on the experiences of Kurdish women, along with the effects of climate change on women. A workshop called, “Women’s Liberation: Freedom, Organisation and Independence Trilogy”, represented the struggles of Kurdish women. Discussed were the problems facing Kurdish women, their history, organisation, and how the North and East Syrian “Women’s Revolution” mobilised into a dynamic force.
While the Jineolojî Workshop was opened within the scope of the conference, attention was drawn to the role of Kurdish women in the liberation of society. The Jineology Workshop was combined with the “Role of women in war and conflict areas” workshop. Participants in the workshop were evaluated on the role and position of female fighters in Northern and Eastern Syria.
“Many wins and victories have been achieved”
Manal Mohammed, a member of the Kongra Star Diplomatic Relations Committee, said that women need a democratic revolution. Talking about the revolutions developing in the world, Manal Muhammed said, “However, the Rojava revolution is very important. Because through him we saw that women organize themselves and become a symbol. Women in Northern and Eastern Syria have achieved many gains and victories thanks to Leader Abdullah Öcalan’s thoughts and philosophy.”
Emphasis on Kongra Star
Pointing to the role of female fighters, especially Kurdish women, in the fight against ISIS, Manal Muhammed emphasized that women should unite to expand their struggle. Talking about Kongra Star and women’s studies, Manal Muhammed said that Kongra Star was able to bring all the components together and organize their lives through committees.
“The responses were encouraging”
Speaking on the sidelines of the Jineology Workshop, Rohlat Aref from Northern and Eastern Syria said, “Women in Northern and Eastern Syria are eager to consolidate the experiences of women in all countries, especially Arab countries. Our workshop is based on promoting the Kurdish issue, especially Kurdish women. However, we focused on promoting Jineology, the science of women. In this sense, the reactions were positive and encouraging.”
A stand was opened against violations
On the other hand, a group of women held a solidarity stand on the sidelines of the conference to condemn the violations affecting Palestinian, Kurdish, Yazidi and Syriac women. The international community has been called upon to stop these violations. Women chanted slogans in many languages for the liberation of Palestine and Kurds and for the liberation of imprisoned women.
The conference continues with discussions.
