NEWS CENTER – It is warned that extreme heat waves, which are considered as one of the effects of global warming, will last longer and intensify. Extreme temperatures are expressed by three criteria: abnormally high temperatures, hot nights that prevent the body from cooling itself, and for many days this did not continue.
Scientists expect thermal stress deaths in Europe to double or even triple this century, depending on the extent of warming.
The balance sheet of extreme heat in France was heavy. 6800 hectares of vegetation was burned in the forest fire, which is currently ongoing in the Landiras region in the south of Gironde province, and 10 thousand people were evacuated.
Firefighters across the country are battling eight fires. According to European satellite data, more than 50 thousand hectares of land in France has been ash since the beginning of the year. It represents an area several times higher than the average of the previous 15 years. A similar situation is taking place in Spain, and summer is not over yet.
While historical droughts and record-breaking temperatures are experienced almost everywhere on the European continent, they have especially heavy effects on rivers.
Officials in Germany have warned that the Rhine river waters will fall to critical levels in the coming days. Such a situation will make the transportation of cargo, especially coal and diesel oil, difficult in the river.
In the United Kingdom, the Infant River Thames, from which the River Thames takes its source, has completely dried up over eight kilometers of surface. Considering the temperatures rising to 36 degrees, this situation is not expected to improve quickly.
