NEWS CENTER – The Youth Commune Firaz Dag made a statement calling people to take part in the local commemoration on the 15th of August, the day that marks the beginning of the armed struggle of the PKK, the statement can be read as it follows:
“The 15th of August 1984 is an important date for the Turkish-Kurdish conflict as it marks the PKK’s first military attack in Eruh and Şemdinli, led by Mahsum Korkmaz (known as “Fermandar Agit”).
As of this day, the party officially launched an armed struggle against the Turkish state, organising under the HRK’ê (later ARGK’ê) in the mountains and training camps in Syria and Lebanon. This step in the militarisation of the Kurdish struggle for self-determination plays a crucial role today as we observe the successful growth of the Kurdistan freedom movement in the Middle East and across the world.
The spirit of Fermandar Agit and the 15th August uprising against Turkish state authoritarianism continues to live on through the revolution in Rojava, the resistance of the HPG/YJA-STAR in Zap, Metîna and Avaşîn, and the persistent hope of the Kurdish people for victory and liberation.
On this basis, we call on our community and friends to join in on 14th August, 11am at Finsbury Park for a celebration with music, traditional food, govend and speeches.
