NEWS CENTER – In the message sent to the Security Council regarding the attack on 20 July, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said that “22,740 Turkish violations have been documented.” “Turkey has expansionist targets behind its attacks and there is no security or military agreement with Ankara,” the ministry said. “Baghdad’s message demands an apology from the Turkish side to Iraq and its people,” the ministry added.
BAGDAT’S REQUESTS
In the statement, it was noted that Baghdad asked the Security Council to “issue a declaration condemning the attack on Iraq’s sovereignty” by the Turkish state.
Reciting the message of Baghdad, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said that a decision should be made obligatory for Turkey to withdraw its military forces from Iraqi territory, that the attacks should be strongly condemned and an independent international team should be held to hold the perpetrators accountable, He demanded that it be included in the agenda of the Council and that Turkey be compelled to pay compensation for the loss in tourism activities in the last bombardment.
Fuad Hussein announced on Saturday that the UN Security Council would meet urgently on Tuesday to discuss the Turkish state’s attacks.
HEAD OF THE GENERAL STAFF: TURKISH FORCES MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE POINTS THEY OCCUPED
At this time, Iraqi Chief of General Staff Abdul Emir Rashid Yarallah reminded the Turkish forces’ border violations and occupations in many areas. Yarallah emphasized the necessity of sending armed forces and peshmerga to force the Turkish forces to withdraw from their positions in order to gain control over Iraq.
Speaking at the Iraqi parliament, Yarallah noted that “there has been an increase in the number of raids and occupations by Turkish forces, and an increase in the number of positions (100 positions) within Iraqi territory near Dohuk.”
EMERGENCY MEETING OF THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL
At the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday, UN Special Envoy to Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert said that the parties are ready for a joint investigation.
According to Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Kazim in a speech on Monday “emphasized the importance of an independent or joint transparent and comprehensive investigation.”
It was reported that Kazimi said it was vital to “end speculation, denial, misunderstanding and escalating tensions”. The UN envoy added that Turkey is also “ready to deal with the problem jointly with Iraq”.
UN IRAQ AMBASSADOR: 9 PEOPLE KILLED, 33 PEOPLE INJURED
Hennis-Plasschaert stated that 9 tourists, including three children, were killed and 33 injured in the attack. It was reported that 11 of the 33 injured had undergone surgical intervention and the condition of three of them was still critical. Hennis-Plasschaert said that on the afternoon of 20 July, five howitzers fell on the village of Perex in Zaxo, one of them hitting an uninhabited hill and the other four hitting the center of the tourist area.
Hennis-Plasschaert also reminded the PKK’s statement that they were not in the region after the attack.
SHOCKING RESPECT TO LIQUID PROTECTION LAW
Hennis-Plasschaert said the attack on a prominent tourist site “shows a shocking disregard for the universally accepted standards of international humanitarian and human rights law that seeks to protect civilian life and protect civilians”.
The UN envoy stated that the requirement that all parties to the conflict “always take all possible measures not to harm civilians” was “clearly not complied with”.
The ambassador concluded: “Indeed, it is of great importance that all attacks on Iraqi territory cease. This type of aggression not only recklessly raises national and regional tensions, it also causes, as we have seen, grave humanitarian tragedies.”
