BEHDINAN – The Press Center of the Eastern Kurdistan Defense Units (YRK) announced in a written statement that their colleague Rüken Jiyan (Sena Mayûf) was martyred in a natural event and revealed her identity.
The following was stated in the YRK statement:
“On July 1, 2022, our friend Rüken Jiyan, along with her fellow members of the unit, died as a result of a natural event while on duty.
For many years in the mountains of Kurdistan, an unparalleled struggle has been waged against the invading enemy. This struggle is being managed in difficult conditions on every side. In this struggle, the mountains of Kurdistan became shelters and areas of life for us. But this incident that happened was a great misfortune and made our units in Eastern Kurdistan very sad. First of all, we express our condolences to the family of Martyr Rüken and to all our patriotic people and we reiterate our promise to raise the struggle for freedom.

Our colleague Rüken Jiyan is of Arab origin and was born in the city of Tirbespiyeh in Rojava Kurdistan. At a young age, she met the Freedom Movement and joined the ranks of the guerrillas. Her youth takes shape in the Rojava Revolution and in that hot and furious process she gets to know Leader Apo’s thoughts and philosophy and decides to live with this ideology. In particular, the idea of a free woman attracts the attention of Rüken. Now she sees the solution in this ideology and this time she decides to join the guerrilla group. When she reaches the free mountains, she does not face any serious problems in understanding and joining. As an Arab woman, she feels more comfortable in the ranks of the guerrillas and devotes herself to the aims and practices of the Apoyi movement. Our friend Rüken had already understood well in the experience of the revolution in the West that the system and paradigm that Leader Apo is advancing us, each nation, the units of the society should become more of their own. That’s why he never felt like a foreigner in our ranks, he marched for freedom with all his heart and soul. Our honorable friend Rüken Jiyan, as an Arab woman, became a militant of Leader Apo, in this truth she left a fundamental mark for us.
As Leader Apo gets deeper into the ideology, she understands the social and historical reality of women, rebuilds herself with the ideology of women’s freedom so that she can respond to the backwardness that is applied to women from the side of the mind of the dominant man with his struggle. Martyr Rüken demonstrated with her persistence and involvement that if a woman makes her decision from the side of freedom, tries to become her own as a woman, she can overcome all kinds of obstacles. Rüken friend wanted to do more work as the leader’s ideals grew, on the other hand she wanted to know the Kurdish people in every possible way. A very oppressed person who knows no limits for freedom was the academy of life for friend Rüken. She got to know herself more in this academy, she did not reduce her efforts to succeed in her life. With her march in the ranks of the guerrillas, she wanted to run towards freedom at a high tempo and in order to be a companion of Leader Apo, she lived with the ideology of women’s liberation in all moments of her life and became the most successful female guerrilla of democratic modernity.
In 2018, our friend Rüken moved to the areas of Eastern Kurdistan. From the day he took her place in the work until the moment of his martyrdom, she worked without hesitation, with great desire and enthusiasm. Her high curiosity and love allowed her to get to know the culture and history of this region and to join the society of this place in the best harmony. She often stated that her biggest dream is to be a guerilla in the mountains of Shaho and to get to know the people of that area closely. Our friend Rüken never put her dreams aside, as Rêber Apo encouraged, she always lived with them and in order to be able to reach them, she had great efforts and as a result, she flowed towards her dreams with a flowing spirit. With her constant focus on her goal, she lived in the true revolutionary sense. Our sweet-blooded friend Rüken Jiyan, in this freedom struggle, as much as she recognized the consciousness of a free woman, at the same time, she had an opinion and attitude towards the consciousness of a dominant man. He left us precious values as a militant of the free woman’s path. We, as her friends, need to understand her efforts and have practicality and passion in implementing Leader Apo’s ideals. She was so careful and curious about the truth of this life that from the beginning until now he studied all the dynamism’s experienced in the Freedom Movement and tried to swim in this sea of meanings and become one with it. Her searching personality brought her closer to Leader Apo’s philosophy and progressed at a higher pace in understanding Leader’s thoughts and philosophy. Our comrade Rüken became the standard of this line with all her revolutionary life and became the leader of this case.
Comrade Rüken had a great struggle and fight against the occupation of Kurdistan and the Middle East with a deep consciousness. Because she had a very high level of knowledge of the truth about the enemy, she enlightened all her friends on this issue.
Today, with the martyrdom of our friend Rüken, our hate and hatred towards the invading enemies increased and the thoughts and feelings of revenge, which are always bright in our hearts and minds, became even more difficult. Because of this fact, as units of Eastern Kurdistan, we will always follow the footsteps of martyr Rüken and achieve the goals and dreams of our martyrs with the highest efforts.”
