The people’s revolutionary war is a historical duty that must be fulfilled
The line of People’s Revolutionary War in Kurdistan, which has reached its fiftieth anniversary and has developed under the leadership of Rêber Apo and PKK, is advancing with the most epic resistances despite regional and international attacks of the counter-revolution. Definitions and evaluations have been made on the People’s Revolutionary War, which began with the emergence and armed struggle of the PKK.
The Kurds must see the People’s Revolutionary War not only as a perspective, but as the only way and solution to exist freely on earth as a nation and a people. If we want to live with our own values, identity and dignity and determine our own future, we must organize ourselves according to the People’s Revolutionary War, which means a defensive war with all our material and spiritual existence against the enemy who aims to destroy us completely. The People’s Revolutionary War is a historical duty and responsibility for the Kurds who want to live in freedom and dignity. To renounce a defensive war, although it is necessary, is a great crime against history and humanity, as well as denying oneself as a whole, contradicting the principles of freedom and committing oneself to genocide like a sacrificial sheep.
“Not wanting or not applying the law is the greatest illegality. Where this happens, the laws of the jungle apply. Therefore, all individuals, communities and peoples who have the right violate the law by remaining silent in the face of injustice. It is the sacred right of resistance to demand a right and to rise up, if necessary, as the right is taken away by force. It is also the essence of the formation of law and justice. No one or no people can have the right to remain silent or to submit in the face of illegality. The violation of the original law, the poisoning of a society and a state result from this submission. The legitimate defense is the basic legal attitude that must never be abandoned in the creation and application of law. Individuals, communities and peoples who do not meet the requirements have no right to consider themselves human beings and complain. In particular, the First, which made and formalized all universal rights into indispensable rights, the civil, economic and social rights of individuals with second and third generation rights, and the cultural and self-determination rights of peoples are the rising values of the age and form one of the cornerstones on which democratic civilization is based.” – Abdullah Ocalan
There are many examples of the revolutionary people’s war in the world. Although the geography, conditions and character of the enemy may change, the People’s Revolutionary War is the war to protect the existence and freedom of the oppressed, colonized, destroyed nations and societies whose freedom has been taken and whose rights have been usurped. The People’s Revolutionary War refers to the processes of hard struggle conducted at the cost of hundreds of thousands or even millions of victims, which is the price of freedom and independence. The Vietnamese people gained their independence against French and U.S. colonialism at the cost of almost half of the population becoming casualties or war casualties. The Algerian people lost one and a half million people for their freedom. The Soviet Union could defend the homeland and the revolution against Hitler’s fascism only with the death of tens of millions of people. History is full of such examples. As can be seen from these examples, the People’s Revolutionary War is the total resistance of the peoples against the occupation, plunder, destruction, enslavement and genocidal attacks of the colonialist rulers. It is a just and progressive war that must be waged against the destructive attacks on the material and spiritual existence of the peoples.
As can be seen in history, societies oppressed against the militaristic development and enslaving activities of the ruling, etatist, invading civilization have always resorted to defensive wars to protect themselves. The millennial development of societies could only be achieved in the form of various resistances and uprisings based on self-defense. The peoples entered into great defensive wars in the form of rebellion, guerrilla, militia and people’s defense armies, against the colonial and invading internal reactionary sovereignties. The just defense wars of the societies differ in content from the militarist monopoly wars.
“We are against all wars”
We should not fall into the generalization, in a sense, monopolistic, colonial-militaristic monopoly wars that they legitimize and indirectly support. We are also against colonialist, exploitative, plundering, anti-socialist and enslaving genocidal wars and we are waging humanity’s war of freedom against these wars. It is a human, moral and democratic duty to oppose such reactionary wars of extortion.
Revolutionary people’s wars liberate through progressive wars that protect the existence of society, its material and spiritual values, and enable the free development of its moral and political capacities. The wars of conquest and plunder of exploitative sovereignties are reactionary, anti-social, exploitative, predatory and destructive. The forces of Democratic Modernity, following the tradition of the democratic civilization system, systematized their self-defense with the Revolutionary People’s War and resort to a defensive war against central-civilization militarism. Where there is no peace and there is an enemy, war is inevitable. Those who do not perceive both, the enemy and fascism, and say: “I am against war”, admits defeat and slavery. Awareness of the enemy is important in this regard. Those who do not know their enemy do not know how to fight or how to live freely. The most important work of the PKK has been to clarify the facts of betrayal, surrender and resistance, cooperation and patriotism among the Kurds. Some circles misrepresent our measures of patriotism and resistance that have been clarified as the result of our fifty-year struggle.
In a place like Amed, a group of agents and traitors, who have been given the image of a family by the enemy, are sitting in front of the HDP, insulting our values and demanding surrender and betrayal every day. The patriotic people of Amed, especially the youth, should never tolerate this spy group that must be disbanded. Some personalities who think they are practicing democratic politics are legitimizing the agent group by talking about “democratic rights” in the name of so-called politics and democracy. Can treason be defined as a “right”? It is necessary to reject and expose similar approaches that pervert the truth and legitimize treason. Such understandings are an attitude that liberalism tries to spread. They can be either dishonest, careless people who do not know what they are talking about, or deceivers who distort and disguise patriotism, with things that have nothing to do with values, or agents with ties to special warfare. Treason cannot be a right, treason is a curse that must be removed.
Our freedom as a people, from the yoke of colonization and genocide, lies in the war of liberation. For war, the people must be organized, trained, armed, and command, coordination and administration are required. The sum of this is the People’s Revolutionary War. Without that, there can be no liberation, freedom or peace. People who do not have the power of self-defense are not taken seriously and their rights are not granted. This is because self-defense is the guarantee of right and justice. Those with little and inhibited power can achieve peace only by making their opponents accept them. That which is called fraternity happens only when one is as equal as the peoples with whom one lives, otherwise it is a fallacy, a deception. As İbrahim Kaypakkaya commented, “The slogan of fraternity of peoples is a liberal bourgeois trick. First full equality, then the fraternity of peoples …”
The Chairman analyzed this situation in the best way from the very beginning and devoted all his concentration to creating the reality of the fighting people and the militants’ militant leadership. This is how the resurrection of the Kurds took place. All this developed under the chairman of the party. Otherwise, the resistance could not have developed for one day, let alone a strong party leadership and a strong ideology to wage a strategic and long-term revolutionary people’s war. For this reason, the chairman said, “Without a party, not even a leaf can move in Kurdistan.” This is because the party is the leading motor force that determines the goal, strategy and tactics of the people’s revolutionary war. Without party organization and ideological line, there can be no war. The stronger the party leadership is, the stronger the war will be waged and freedom achieved.
When societies are not institutionalized materially, spiritually, morally and politically and their land is made uninhabitable, it indicates a state of war. The Kurds have often been put in this situation. The peoples who are to be liquidated through the practices of genocide have two options; they will either turn to the revolutionary people’s war, protect their existence, safeguard their dignity and secure their freedom, or surrender to the sovereign powers by submitting dishonourably. The second situation means lack of will, surrender and disgrace, which has nothing to do with peace. As the Algerian revolutionary intellectual Frantz Fanon, who fought against French colonialism, said; ” National liberation is the only cure for the pathological condition that colonization imposes on both the colonizer and the colonized. Unaccustomed to the colonial situation; like an iron collar, it can only be broken…(…) Those who stand aside and watch are either cowards or traitors.”
It is necessary to properly define the widely used and hoped-for term “peace.” Peace is possible through self-defense warfare. This is expressed by the long-time theoretician of the People’s Revolutionary War, Mao Zedong, the leader of the Chinese Revolution, who declared that “we fight for peace.” The concept of peace, which everyone interprets in their own way, is one of the most ambiguous concepts. The concept of peace was clearly specified by the Chairman. “Peacemaking can attain its true meaning only when the self-defense of societies functions, thus preserving and securing the moral and political character of society. Apart from that, a peace, in the sense, means nothing but being a trap for all communities and peoples and the continuation of the state of war in implicit forms. The word peace, under the conditions of capitalist modernity, is a word loaded with traps. It is very impractical to use it without proper identification. Once again, peace is neither the abolition of war altogether nor a unilaterally dominated state of stability and absence of war. In peace, there are parties; there is no absolute superiority of one side, nor should there be. Third, weapons are silenced on the basis of consent to the moral and political institutional functioning of society. These three conditions are, in principle, the basis of peace. True peace is meaningless if it is not based on these principled conditions.”
When morality and politics fail, society is left with only self-defense. War is the absence of peace. Therefore, peace can attain meaning only on the basis of self-defense. Peace without self-defense can only be an expression of surrender and slavery. Self-defensive peace, especially democratic stability and reconciliation, which liberalism imposes on peoples and societies today, has no other meaning than the concealment of bourgeois class rule carried out unilaterally by force of arms and the covert state conduct of war. Presenting a self-defensive peace as true peace is the greatest effort of ideological capital hegemony.
Our chairman and party did what was necessary for the revolutionary people’s war even before the PKK appeared. Because without such a process, the resurrection of existence, the realization of identity and freedom would not be in question. As a concept, we did not doubt the revolutionary people’s war. Without such a process, neither identity nor freedom could exist. (…) The nation-state conception of sovereignty was based on the theory of indivisible power. (…) Not even a pebble could be dropped. A divinity that kills to say that one exists, or more precisely, the divinity of the nation-state itself, strengthened a thousand times more than the old deities, central power, homogeneous society, absolute slave citizen and monistic in each subject (“one homeland”) , ‘one language’, ‘one culture’, ‘one flag’, ‘one anthem’, etc.) were indisputable with the understanding and powers under its command. The slightest argument and counter-argument was prosecuted as the most dangerous crime against the “unity and integrity of the fatherland” and was punished with the most severe punishment. To make the slightest counter-idea in an environment where such conditions make him speak and confirm with all his discourses and actions, it could be possible only by defending himself with his difficult methods. This was not discussed, but its strategic and tactical requirements. In fact, the means of legitimate defense were used without hesitation during the period of PKK’s appearance. The PKK had to organize itself as a kind of militia force. Otherwise, it could not last even one day. Even if it stopped, it would not be different from other forces and would not be able to escape its liquidation.” (Chairman) Just as PKK led the revolution in Kurdistan and the region with its self-defense resistance, it will fight against the colonialist and capitalist system with the same understanding and practice to secure its social existence.
Kurds gained presence and consciousness by resurrecting with the People’s Revolutionary War under the leadership of PKK in our old paradigm, the strategy and goal of the People’s Revolutionary War were state-oriented. It was based on the classical perspective of National Liberation. The goal was to overcome genocide, achieve will to exist, achieve national identity unity, achieve freedom consciousness, and achieve power. In short, the goal was to build existence against the politics of denial and destruction of the genocidal systems, and this was largely achieved. In the new paradigm, it has become different and has received its content according to the democratic modernity and the democratic nation system. The being has been formed, at this stage the being must keep itself healthy. This means to obtain a status. The first phase of the People’s Revolutionary War was the unveiling of the Kurdish existence. The current phase is about finalizing the existence, giving it status and securing it. All the efforts of the Turkish state are aimed at preventing this status. Accordingly, they are developing plans to completely liquidate the democratic system of Rojava and north-eastern Syria and to occupy southern Kurdistan. Concretely, the practical implementation of the revolutionary people’s war today means the construction of nine basic dimensions in the perspective of the democratic nation. This construction, realized through the synthesis of local and universal democratic values, has a socialist and international character. The presented model not only solves the Kurdish problem, but also enables the region to overcome its crisis and democratize itself, as well as the development of the system of democratic modernity against capitalist modernity. With the 1993 ceasefire, the chairman focused on solving the problem through political-democratic methods other than war. Our movement made a strategic change for this purpose. Although democratic, political and peaceful methods were prioritized and great efforts were made until 2010, when the colonialist Turkish state insisted on genocide, the 4th Strategic Period was started and the process of revolutionary people’s war was resumed. The dimensions of the KCK and the Democratic Nation, which could not be realized by political and peaceful means, are being built only with the Revolutionary People’s War. Until the nation-state system accepts the will of the Democratic Nation, the People’s Revolutionary War option will be the main strategy.
The People’s Revolutionary War brought about a social revolution among the Kurds and the peoples of the region and revealed the reality of free life, free men and women and militants. The revolutionary development has turned into the reality of self-government and achieved a democratic nation system. After the 1990s, the genocidal policy in Kurdistan pursued by both the global capitalist hegemonic powers and the regional colonialist Turkish, Iranian, Iraqi and Syrian nation-states after the First World War has failed. The People’s Revolutionary War led by the PKK resurrected the Kurdish people, gave them thoughts and will, transformed them into an ideological, political and military power, brought the Kurdish revolution to the level of a regional revolution and led to Democratic Middle East Confederalism. From this developed the Democratic Nation Solution, which found life in the example of Rojava and from there reached a universal level.
