NEWS CENTER –
While the world public is following the war in Ukraine with great attention, the Turkish dictator Erdogan sees the chance of a new invasion of Syria. Defense preparations are in full swing here in the self-governing areas of north-eastern Syria. And the left in Germany?
I wipe the last speck of dust off my machine gun with a rag. It is now sparkling clean, ready to defend the people here against another war of aggression by Erdogan and his jihadist gangs. Later, I sit by the fire with my comrades from our internationalist unit, listening to Kurdish revolutionary songs. We all think about the next few days. I know the attack is coming. Erdogan needs the war. He has driven Turkey into a deep economic crisis in recent years and is now trying to distract from this with his war against Rojava. He then wants to hold early elections and still hopes to remain in power through the military victory.
Almost ten years ago, a revolution based on women’s liberation, ecology and democracy unfolded in Rojava. A region in which Kurds and Arabs live peacefully with all other peoples today. With its model of self-government through councils, the revolution represents enormous hope for the peoples of the region, but also worldwide. That was the reason why I set out several years ago to defend these achievements with the people here. I am firmly convinced that only a system in which the many different peoples live together on an equal footing and in which women’s liberation is a central pillar can bring about positive change in this region. As Erdogan’s war rhetoric grows louder every day, we (YPG fighters) make all necessary preparations for a new war of aggression by Turkey. Erdogan is engaged in a kind of horse-trading: He demands the green light for his war of aggression to allow Sweden and Finland to join NATO.
I know what’s at stake. Turkey’s last wars of aggression against north-eastern Syria in 2016, 2018 and 2019 not only brought a lot of death and displacement, in the occupied areas there are daily reports of atrocities committed by the jihadists supported by Turkey. Many of them are former IS or Al-Nusra fighters. So it’s no surprise that the last two IS leaders were hiding there. I also feel responsible. I consider myself lucky to be part of this revolution. But that also means that I am willing to take responsibility for social change. to overcome one’s weaknesses. And to fight with firm conviction for the values of Rojava. A social awakening that gives people around the world hope that another life is possible. But this attack, according to Turkish propaganda, is intended to occupy a 30 km deep zone along the entire length of the border. That would be the end of Rojava.
I wonder what the left will do in Germany? While the last two wars of aggression were met with a few minor demonstrations and actions, they were unable to prevent the war. But now the question of the continuation of the revolution is at stake. To be or not to be. An internationalist revolution must be defended internationally. Therefore, at this moment, just before the storm, I can only appeal to everyone to be aware of their responsibility. What will you tell the future generation in the event of a defeat of this unique social awakening here?
And if many are wondering what should actually interest Rojava? It’s in Syria. Is far away. Then I can only answer: Rojava shows all of us that another world is possible. The very hope that comes from the existence of this revolution gives tremendous power and strength to people around the world.
I have vowed not to give up an inch to fascism without a fight. Neither the German, the Turkish, nor that of the IS. But I also realize that we can only defeat him together. I shoulder my weapon, then head to where I’ll await the enemy’s advance in the coming days. I’m wondering what are you going to do when the Turkish invasion of Rojava begins?
