NEWS CENTER – Saddam Hussein went to jail to make her regret it, telling her that he will do whatever want but only to regret it. She responded and says “Have you finished? There is something you need to know. I am Kurdish and Kurdistan is I, kill me, but with my murder thousands of Kurds will wake up and rise up.”

Leyla Qasim was born in 1925 in the village of Bamil in Khanaqin in a poor and patriotic family. Finishing her education at her hometown school, she has always been successful in her studies. Leyla was confident when she stood up to the Iraqi regime.

Before being hanged, while in Abu Khirab prison, she asked her family for two things. To have a Kurdish traditional dress, so when she would felt martyr, she would do it as a Kurd. Her second wish is for her mother to remove her yellow goat and take it with her, so that her braids so they can fly into the colorful flag of Kurdistan.

Even when she was in her childhood age, her feelings of patriotism were strong. Leyla was a lover of her country. The Ba’athist regime’s oppression of the Kurdish people also affected it. She was actively involved in politics in 1971, at which time she organized students at Baghdad University. Leyla Qasim and her friends take the news of organizing in the cities as their basis. During the operations of the 1974s, Leyla Qasim and her friends were arrested. When arrested they are referred to as terrorists in the media. In order for Leyla to surrender, and to tell them that she regretted it the Iraqi president visited her incessantly. But the resistance that Leyla raises threatens the Ba’athist regime.

A Baghdad court has sentenced them to death for blowing up a cinema. The execution of Leyla Qasim is widely known in the world, Leyla became the first woman to be executed in the history of Iraq and Kurdistan. When she told Saddam that her martyrdom would wake up all the Kurds, it really did happen, thousands of Kurds rose up on Leyla’s soul. Today thousands of families name their child Leyla, thousands of young people stand up in Leyla’s footsteps. Leyla achieved her goal of becoming Kurdistan.

Cigerxwin’s poem Leyla Şehid for Leyla Qasim

Leyla is the daughter of Mit and Meda
He gave his life for us
Live as long as you can
Enjoy your jar and gada
Lovely and very flowery Leyla
Young Leyla and shocked and shocked
He killed himself like a pheasant
the lion voted in the boy
Leyla lights a candle
It turned on the Kurds
Killing is good for us Kurds
Oppression no longer works
