BRAZIL – A 38-year-old black man died on Wednesday afternoon (25/5) after being approached by federal highway patrol officers in Umbaúba, on the southern coast of Sergipe. Videos recorded by witnesses show the victim being handcuffed on the ground, writhing, and then being pressed in the trunk of the vehicle while a smoke similar to chemical ammunition comes out.
According to G1 newspapper, the man was identified as Genivaldo de Jesus Santos and the approach was witnessed by his nephew, Wallyson de Jesus, who said his uncle was stopped while riding a motorcycle. “I was nearby and saw everything. I informed the officers that my uncle had a mental disorder. They asked him to raise his hands and they found in his pocket cartridges of medication. My uncle became nervous and asked what he had done. I asked him to calm down and listen to me,” he told the portal.
The young man reported that even though he tried to talk to the cops, he was not heard, and that they used pepper spray and put him in the vehicle. “They threw some kind of gas into the trunk, went to the police station, but my uncle arrived there unconscious. The police took him to the hospital, but it was already too late.
