LONDON – Kurdish Students Beyond the Homeland & the Struggle for Freedom are organising a conference on 30th of April. The collective made a call as it follows:
“Kurdish Students Beyond the Homeland & the Struggle for Freedom; is a one-day conference consisting of three panels, workshops and an evening programme.
Generally, as students we are caught between the damaging impact of colonialism and assimilation and as such struggle to envision our collective future.
Particularly as Kurdish students living away from the homeland, we are constantly battling with our internal perception of ourselves as ‘Kurds’, we are constantly questioning the implications of what being Kurdish means and what responsibilities that carries, rarely leaving the time or energy to consider our future.
A strong sense of identity is the key to actualising our vision of a free Kurdish society, both beyond the homeland and within the Middle-East. Therefore, diving into Kurdish culture, history, literature, language and politics signifies and strengthens an understanding for the importance of Kurdish identity. Students from colonised societies play a huge role in liberation, it is our responsibility to come into this role in order to create substantial change in Kurdistan and the Middle East.
This event will take attendees through an education journey from the roots of the colonisation of Kurdistan, to the current position of Kurdish students living away from the homeland and for the final panel, a crucial evaluation of our future as Kurds. Within the line-up of workshops, we are providing the opportunity for attendees to study Kurdish oral literature ranging from all four parts of Kurdistan, Introductory Kurdish lesson, Jineology and Kurdish poetry.
The evening programme will consist of live music, poetry, contemporary dance and screening of Mehmet Aksoy’s film will be a presentation Kurdish culture’s great depth and reach.”
