GREECE – For the second day, the operation of the National Police continues at the School of Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, against students who gather to defend the university’s asylum. After yesterday’s images of riot police attacking students with chemicals and flash bombs, the forces of the ELAS. had withdrawn after new clashes with the students, which resulted in injuries.
The students were protesting against the eviction/transformation of the building, which was a squat for 34 years until 2021. Police evicted the squat over New Years, where students and other local youth frequently gathered.
On Tuesday morning, the riot police forces returned to the university area reinforced, attempting to act against the students who were inside the university and others gathered outside the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry.
According to the testimonies and videos of journalists, at least one arrest has been made, about which the police forces refuse to give information to teachers and journalists. The reasons of the protest were not clarified on the Greek outlets independent medias who shared the videos.
In fact, as can be heard in a video by infolibre.gr, police radios are constantly transmitting orders to remove journalists from the premises, probably in anticipation of a coordinated operation to invade the SSE building.
