BRAZIL – Indigenous community YANOMAMI that had a 12 year old child raped until death and a 3 year old trown at the river by illegal miners, was burned down. The miners took a baby from them and until now it’s unknown where the rest of the community is. The absurd and inhumane attack occurred at a time when the Brazilian parliament, supported by the fascist president Jair Bolsonaro, is trying to pass a series of reforms to the constitution which authorize and facilitate the exploitation of demarcated indigenous territory, as well as hinder such demarcations.
Remains of recently burnt wood in a space that was previously occupied by a hut and a completely empty community with no one. This scenario of destruction was the one found by a team of Federal Police in Aracaçá, on Yanomami Indigenous Land, this week. The place was in the news after a 12 year old Yanomami girl was reported to have died after being raped by miners who illegally exploited the region.
The accusation came to light on Monday (25). Two days later, Federal Police agents, accompanied by representatives of Funai and the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) went to the community to investigate the case.
In a joint statement released Thursday afternoon (28), they said they had found no evidence of a crime of murder or rape. There is also no evidence of the death of another child who had disappeared into a river. However, they informed that they are continuing with the investigation because the “investigations have demonstrated the need to deepen the investigation, for a better clarification of the facts.
The report of the death of the Yanomami girl was made public by the president of the District Council for Indigenous Health Yanomami and Ye’kwana (Condisi-YY), Júnior Hekurari Yanomami. He affirmed that he had received the report from indigenous people who live in the region.
On their trip to the region, the Federal Police and other agencies descended on two locations: Waikás and Aracaçá, which are close by. Hekurari was part of the group and reports that in Waikás the helicopter that was taking them landed in an area used by miners. There they met some indigenous people who did not want to talk much about the case.
