As Turkish narratives of superiority continue to be spread by the Erdogan government, Ottomanism is being conjured, in all its deadliness, like a ghost of the recent past. With increased hostility against Kurds, Armenians and now Alevis too, the Turkish government reveals itself to be closer to its massacring predecessors than anticipated.
According to an artcile reported by Duvar news agency, a new addition has been made to the threats and hate speech against Alevis living in Turkey. Today, the text ‘Death to Alevis’ was found painted on the interior of the garden wall of a flat in the Pendik district of Istanbul. The text was written by a red cross which had been painted on the wall.
The red cross is used to mark the homes of Alevis and was used previously by the Turkish army in the Dersîm and Mereş massacres. Crimes committed in the homes marked with such a cross are not punishable by law, as they are deemed worthy in the eyes of the state.
Similar incidents were recorded in Istanbul Sultangazi and Gaziemir districts of Izmir, and continue to increase.
