Lawyers of the People’s Leader; Newroz Uysal, Cengiz Yürekli, Faik Özgür Erol and Mazlum Dinç made a new application to the Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office to meet with their clients on Wednesday.
Lawyers were last able to meet with their clients on May 2, 2018 for the first time after 8 years after the People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan was abducted to İmralı High Security Type-F Prison in 1999. The Leader has been kept under severe isolation since.
Hunger strikes and death fasts
Lawyers met with People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan on May 22, June 12 and June 18, of later that year and finally on August 7, 2019. These meetings were made possible after 7,000 people in Kurdistan, Turkey and abroad initiated hunger strike and death fast actions to break the isolation being imposed on the leader.
During the meeting on May 22, 2019, the Leader met with his lawyers from the Asrın Law Office on the island of Imrali, and called for an end to all self-sacrifice actions, stating that revolutionary activists must live on to brighten the future.
All actions were ended per this call, and the next three meetings on June 12 and June 18, and finally on August 7, 2019, were the last meetings to be held with the leader. None of the 104 applications submitted since the last meeting have been responded to.
