Huseyin Deniz was attacked on 9 August 1992 in Ceylanpınar, Urfa. He died at the age of 36.
Deniz was born on February 6, 1956 in the village of Sıtılilê (Akarsu) in Nusaybin. His mother worked at home raising six children, and his father earned a living by working in the municipality.
Deniz, a graduate of Bolu Teacher Training School, has taught in Siverek and Nusaybin since 1975. He was arrested in the 12 September 1980 military coup, and remained in Diyarbakır Prison for three years.
Deniz was interested in Kurdish language and folklore. In 1991, he compiled Kurdish proverbs in the book “Gotinên Pêşiyên Kurdan”. His articles were published in Yeni Ülke, Cumhuriyet, Tercüman, 2000’e Doğru and Welat. He was a member of the International Writers Association (PEN). At the time of his death, he was writing the Forum column in Özgür Gündem and was a Ceylanpınar reporter.
The murder of Hüseyin Deniz was “unsolved” for two years, though it was claimed that a Makarov weapon was used in the murder by Hezbollah member Mehmet Şah Bakır. The Hezbollah member was held responsible for 12 murders committed with that weapon.
The murderer has still not been arrested.
