Nuri Dersimi was the son of a teacher, poet and musician from Dersim, and was related to Seyyit Rıza. He studied veterinary medicine in Istanbul, where he came into contact with newly formed Kurdish nationalist organizations. Nuri is well-known amongst the Kurds for his leading role in the Dersim and the Koçgiri Rebellion.
Organisers of independence
Nuri was born in Hozat in Dersim, in March 1893. His father Mılla İbrahim was from the Milan tribe and had close family relations to Seyit Rıza and his family. Nuri grew up in an environment of educated, intellectuals. Many of whom were killed in Dersim in the 1938 rebellion, and served as the theoretical and practical organizers of the independence resistance.
Nuri joined his first organisation, the Kurdish Talebe (students) Hêvî Society, in Istanbul where he had travelled to for education and joined the Kurdistan Teali Society after serving as the general clerk (general secretary) of the Friends of Kurdistan Society founded in 1912.
He graduated from university in Istanbul on September 22, 1918 and became a certified veterinarian. After the organisation which he had founded and managed, the Friends of Kurdistan Association, was closed, Nuri returned to Dersim for national organization and propaganda.
The rebellions which were started as a mechanism of self-defence against the fascist Turkish state and the oppotunism which the Treaty of Sevres brought. In addition to his participation in the Dersim and Koçgiri rebelions, Nuri served as the consultant of Seyit Rıza in Syria, Jordan and Mardin. He continued to work for the Kurdish nation both in the region and diplomatically. Dr. Nuri Dersimi was at the heart of these diplomatic and intellectual national studies.
Nuri Dersimi conveyed these thoughts to the Kurdish nation both with historical and cultural research and with his educational activities. He has a vast knowledge of Kurdish history and culture. Nuri Dersimi has writings and research on tribes, local figures, relationships and history. These studies, both “Hatıratım” and “Dersim in Kurdistan History” books and published notes and articles are still used by researchers as the main source for the region.
Nuri Dersimi, one of the pioneers of the Dersim Rebellion, moved to Afrin, Western Kurdistan (Rojava), after he was exiled on June 25, 1921 and died there in 1973.
