WAN, NORTHERN KURDISTAN

Kurdistan’s history and geography continue to be the target of the AKP. After burying the ancient city of Hasankeyf under water, the fascist Turkish state is now targeting the Erdîş district of Wan.

Erdîş is the meeting point of the Zilan Creek and Deliçay river. Erdîş and it’s surrounding regions, which have rich water resources, are ideal for agriculture and herding, the only form of income for millions of villagers across northern Kurdistan.

With new HEPPs and dams that the Erdogan regime is building all over occupied northern Kurdistan, nature is being exploited to feed the electricity needs of Turkish cities. The use of such methods is a means of forcing migration and destroying any physical evidence of Kurdish roots.

Tens of villages and thousands of acres of agricultural land were flooded with the Koçköprü Dam, which was built earlier in Zilan. The mass graves, where the victims of the Zilan Massacre were buried, were flooded by a dam built. The spa facilities, which were the livelihoods of the villagers, were demolished in 2016 by the then-district governor who was appointed as an AKP trustee to Erdîş. The same occupying trustee later sold all the resources to a company affiliated with the AKP for 49 years.

Morgedik Dam was built on Deliçay, which is one of the main breeding places of the Pearl Mullet. Thousands of acres of farmland were flooded, and the pearl mullet generation came to the point of extinction. Determined to destroy the nature of Deliçay, AKP is now working on a new HEPP in this region.

Known for its closeness to AKP, Gökakım Elektirik Üretim built four HEPPs in Zilan. The same company has now started work for the construction of a 5th HEPP in Ağaçören village. The first aim of the company that started the preliminary work is to buy the villages’ land cheaply.
