The Turkish telecommunications company, Türk Telekom, asked a mother who does not speak any language other than Kurdish, to explain her request to “either Turkish or Arabic”. The mother, who could not speak either Turkish or Arabic, was not served by the call centre despite an interpreter working with the company translating her request. The fascist representative told the mother to “go learn Turkish or Arabic, then we will serve you.”
Fevziye Başaran, who lives in Batman, asked Türk Telekom to end a contract she had entered into. Fevziye, who does not speak any language other than Kurdish, was asked to make her request either in Turkish or in Arabic. It was not enough for the fascist company that Başaran explained her problem through an interpreter.
The Türk Telekom Customer Representative stated that Başaran should make this request in Turkish or Arabic in order for the contract to be ended, and did not accept that the contract be terminated.
When the mother’s child intervened in the call, he was told: “The language of our country is Turkish. If your mother does not learn Turkish and does not speak Turkish with us, we are not able to close the line.”
Outcry
The scandal has sparked tensions on social media, with #TurkTelekomBoykot trending in Turkey. The fascist policies by the company have angered thousands of people.
For years, Kurds in occupied northern Kurdistan have been put through every type of torture, as with the September 12 coup where torture and genocide was committed in the prisons of Amed against Kurdish people where they were forced to be Turkified.
The main target of the fascist Turkish state has been the Kurdish language, hence why the Arabic language is provided as a second option to Turkish, rather than Kurdish, despite the numbers of Kurds in Turkish occupation borders being substantially high compared to that of Arabs.
