The second stage has been reached in the conversation of national unity between the Democratic Union Party (DUP), which is administering the current confederal system in Rojava, and the Kurdish National Council – Syria (KNC-S), which is an offshoot of the PUK, which operates widely in southern Kurdistan.
In the coming days, the role Rojava will play in the national unity struggle will become clearer, though it is unchallengeable that a historical stage has been reached for the Kurds.
While the USA and France will be the mediators for the unity between Kurds, the approach and attitude of the parties will determine the course of the unity.
Another one of the periods when the foundations of unity were created amongst the Kurds was after the talks held in Duhok in 2014. At the time, the Kurds had captured a great opportunity for unity, which was marred following Turkish cross-border operations, and the relationships developing over political orientations were hampered. The guidelines for the work being carried out now are still shaped around the decisions taken during that time.
What does KNC-S want?
The sincerity of the KNC-S, which moves according to the political course and plans of Turkey, is a serious topic of debate amongst the peoples. One of the basic questions asked by the people of Rojava is what kind of a project the KNC-S was sent to impose on the public.
The main question which needs answering is why the KNC-S has done nothing for the Kurds during the past 9 years when the people have been in an uninterrupted struggle against all kinds terrorists, ranging from ISIS to the Turkish state. Another dilemma is how, after doing nothing, the KNC-S thinks it has a right to use the ‘democracy’ argument as an excuse to get a foot in.
As a matter of fact, the KNC-S does not have a project or roadmap on this subject. Instead of creating or proposing developments for the regional people, the only aim of the KNC-S is to use a half-thought excuse of democracy to sit on the gains of the people. The organisation spent years and thousands of dollars using media outlets to spread the narrative that the administrators of the most democratic system in the world were authoritarian because the KNC-S was illegalised in Rojava after officially aiding the Turkish state’s occupation of Efrin.
Three sections of the KNC-S
The KNC-S has been acting in three wings since steps were taken for national unity.
One section of the KNC-S is entirely under Turkey’s control, and is being administered from Istanbul and Ankara by Ibrahim Biron and Fuat Elikon. The second section is under the control of the KDP and its Hewler-based intelligence agency Parastin. The third section is the group which opened centres in Rojava.
Each of these sections acts separately but serve the same purpose. The Turkey group acts under the MIT, the Hewler group applies the perspective of the US, while those in Rojava wonder if they could hustle some food to eat.
Who are the foreigners?
Although it was not explicitly said at first, the statement of “Foreigners must leave Syria” made by Siud Mele of KNC-S also draws attention.
What they refer to as “foreigners” is the fighters from different Kurdish regions who foght against ISIS and liberated Northern and Eastern Syria while the KNC-S fled with everything they owned.
It is quite clear that these statements were put together by the terrorist Turkish state to be read by their puppets in southern Kurdistan and rojava. The fighters will leave, according to the Turkish state, and the region will be easily occupied.
“Kurd to us, Arabs to you”
KNC-S constantly keeps reitterating its desire to become a partner, not directly but indirectly, in the adminsitation of Rojava which it refers to as Syrian Kurdistan.
While various proposals and projects on this issue are being discussed, KNC-S implements a policy of “Let Dêrik, Qamishlo, Rimêlan, Hasekê and Kobanê be ours, you can rule the Arab regions.”
The approach of KNC-S, which expresses these demands in close circles, is not accepted by the autonomous administration and the public.
KNC-S argument
KNC-S wants to regain a base through these situations, and is trying to organize in many places, especially in Kobanê.
Many former supporters of the group, who had difficulty accepting the KNC-S approach and understanding, were contacted by the organisation. The KNC-S spposedly told its former supporters, “Come, we have made an agreement. We will be a part of the management.” Those who were unconvinced were promised seats, it is unknown which seats the organisation refers to.
Although it is not known exactly where the unity talks between the Kurds will reach, it is predicted that this period will be difficult and take a long time.
