The guerrilla music group Awazê Çiya have released their new album named Botan, on all digital platforms today by the Kurdish-German Culture Institute and the institute’s new digital music channel “4Kurdistan”.
The group attributed their work to the martyrs of Cizre-Botan’s self-governing resistance in the persons of Mehmet Tunç, Pakize Nayir and Asya Yüksel.
Koma Awazê Çiya gave the following information about the emergence of the ‘Botan’ album and it’s production process:
“The Botan album project emerged around a suggestion and an idea. This idea started with the research of Botan’s folk music tradition. As part of the research process we started in 2017, we first shared tasks among the group members and collected all the written and registered Botan classics that we could reach. As a group, we had a discussion on each strand.
On the one hand, we were researching and commenting on each story, on the other hand, we were recording the songs we chose in the studio. The recordings were completed in the culture centre of Martyr Zerdeşt. Mehmûd Berazî made great effort and arranged the songs.
While selecting the songs on the album, we selected Pahîzok, Heyranok, Delal, Belûte, Dengbejî, and Narînk separately from the comment forms. As these forms stand out in separate parts of Botan, the album covers the musical forms of all of Botan. We did not change the lyrics or the way in which the selected songs were interpreted. While doing this, we were based on the balances of the first interpretation of the selected work. So we adhered to the oldest known version and content. ”
Emphasizing that they attributed the album to the martyrs of self-government resistance, Koma Awazê Çiya said:
“We attribute this album to Botan and all self-government resistance martyrs in the persons of Mehmet Tunç, Pakize Nayir and Asya Yüksel.
As in the history of Botan, today it is also an area in Kurdistan where resistance has turned into a lifestyle. This heroism and resistance has completely influenced the music, and the resistance has begun with the songs of Botan. This album is a re-expression of this tradition of resistance. Resistance and success are also possible by renewing this tradition by adhering to its origin. We took such an approach. ”
