Group Yorum’s Helin was immortalized as a result of the hunger strike she entered to sing freely and to live in a free country. Helin Bölek, who launched a hunger strike while being held in Gebze Type-M Women’s Closed Prison, was released on the 152nd day of her action but decided to continue this action in the Resistance House in Sarıyer.
İbrahim Gökçek, another member of Group Yorum, started a hunger strike in the same period, and was released on the 251th day of his action while he was in the Closed Prison No. 9 in Silivri. Gökçek, like Helin Bölek, continued his action at the Resistance House.
Helin had spoken to Mesopotamia Agency while she was still at the Resistance House, explaining why they started this action:
“Despite all these problems, what keeps me standing is my determination to resist. We started the action for four reasons. First, our concert bans should be lifted. Two; The raids on İdil Culture Center should be ended. Three: conspiracy cases against us should be dropped. Four: the removal of our names from terrorist lists.
We became victorious when we decided to resist, because from the very beginning there was a policy set up to silence and liquidate Group Yorum. But with this last move, we completely wasted this plan.
We have also demonstrated concretely the fact that they cannot silence Group Yorum, that this is impossible, that we will display a resistance that sacrifices our body if needed but that we will never surrender.”
While Bölek said that they started their actions in line with the demands of the people, she added that they will not beg the fascist Turkish state to meet the demands:
“These are the demands that must be met from the beginning. But we will not beg for them to be met. These demands will be met one way or another. No power has been able to stand up to the righteous until this time, and it cannot start after today. ”
Speaking to the public, Helin stated: “Only hunger is not a gain within itself. Achievement is based on weaving and organizing this process. It is this organization that will bring the gains. In other words, what determines the outcome in this process is a heavy burden on the shoulders of those who listen to us, those who love us and do something for us.
We seem to say, “The burden of this process is on your shoulders,” but it really is. The issue is not just doing something for us. In fact, it is to do something for yourself and for all injustices and lawlessness.
There will definitely be costs, but how much will be paid will be determined by the process’s sustainers. So I invite everyone to be more of our voice. ”
