ISTANBUL, TURKEY
Deniz Aydın (24) and Taylan Gültekin (30) who were detained in the Sultangazi neighbourhood of İstanbul on 5 January were tortured for 4 hours. Aydın said, ‘They dragged us up 3 flights of stairs and took us to a special section of the police station. “I did my daily sport on you today,” they said, torturing him.
Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said recently that the Turkish state has zero-tolerance for torture, while new evidence of torture continues to surface.
Hacettepe University Psychology Department 4th grade student, Deniz Aydın, and 30-year-old worker, Taylan Gültekin, were taken into custody in the Sultangazi neighbourhood of Istanbul on 5 January, citing declarations which were found in a bag.
Standing amongst other civilians, Deniz Aydın explained that at 16.10 hours a white vehicle stopped directly in front of her and the plain-clothed officers dragged her inside.
Deniz explained what happened: “In a room with a steel door and bell but no camera, a group kicked us on the floor, slapped and attacked us. They especially hit our calves and spines for permanent damage. They threatened us with a gun. Before being taken to the Homeland Police, they said, ‘The age of the white Taurus is over, there are white transits now’. They want to bring back the torture of the 80s. ”
Gültekin stated that the assault was aimed at damaging the internal organs and that they received an assault report by the hospital on the torture.
