BAGHDAD, IRAQ
Iraq is encountering the most severe social crisis in its recent history. After the resignation of Prime Minister Adil Abdulmehdi under the pressure of the streets, President Berhem Salih also resigned. Salih submitted his resignation to parliament.
Salih said before his resignation that he would prefer to resign than to appoint someone who did not accept the protesters.
Pro-Iranian organizations were urging a quick election rather than meeting the demands of the activists.
The reaction of the people who want to change the corrupt regime continues. Crowds in Basra blocked the roads, burned tyres. Since the beginning of October, around 500 people have been killed and around 25,000 people have been injured in Iraq. So far, the government has fulfilled only one of the demands of the activists.
On Tuesday, parliament voted to adopt a new election law. The new law allows people’s representatives to choose based on individual nominations, not based on party lists.
