NISÊBÎN, NORTHERN KURDISTAN
During the self-government resistance, the occupying Turkish state declared a curfew and Nisêbîn of Mêrdîn underwent severe destruction.
On 26 May 2016, a military curfew was declared in the Nisêbîn district of Mêrdîn by the occupying Turkish state followed by armed self-defence and declaration of autonomy by the peoples. While many people were massacred in the basements of Northern Kurdistan by the occupying Turkish state, many people were burnt alive with chemical weapons and the corpses of starved babies were preserved in fridges.
Following the heavy war crimes committed, state officials benefited from complete impunity and the victims were subject to litigation.
On Friday, the trial of Nurşen Demir, a mother of five, who did not leave her home during the curfew was seen.
The prosecution demanded Demir be imprisoned for being a member of an illegal organization, intentionally killing, attempting to kill intentionally, damaging public property, and carrying or keeping unauthorized dangerous goods.
Lawyer Gülbin Şahin rejected the accusations and emphasised that her client could not be blamed for simply not leaving her house during the prohibition period and should, therefore, be acquitted.
However, the court considered Demir being in the city during the prohibition period as sufficient grounds for persecution.
Demir was sentenced to 8 years of imprisonment.
In the Nisêbîn cases, the number of detainees sentenced together with Nurşen Demir rose to 36.
