US senate members showed a strong reaction to the finalisation of Erdogan’s visit to the United States on November 13. While formal processes for the visit are being sped up, the senators have demanded that Erdogan’s visit be cancelled altogether.
Senator Chuck Schumer of the state of New York, in his speech, said “Trump will host Erdogan the White House. To be clear, it is very surprising that an autocrat who has killed and displaced Kurds, our partners in the fight against the ISIS in northern Syria, is being welcomed with pleasure.”
“We still don’t know Trump’s plan to secure ISIS’s permanent defeat,” Schumer added.
Sanction call
On the other hand, five US senators of the Washington administration called for research into Turkey’s breach of the ceasefire agreement made with the United States concerning northern and eastern Syria. They urged the imposition of sanctions in case of confirmation of these claims.
‘Erdogan cannot be considered an ally.’
Republican Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey has prepared a draft law to investigate the human rights violations committed during the attacks in North and East of Syria, by Turkey.
Menendez, via social media, announced that the US Department of State initiated an investigation to look into the violations.
Also, during a speech in government, Menendez emphasised that “Erdogan-administered Turkey can not be seen as an ally.”
US senator Chris van Hollen criticised, “Erdogan wants to assassinate Mazlum Kobane, the commander of the Syrian-Kurdish-led forces that led the fight against ISIS and helped us capture Baghdadi. And in return, Trump wants to host Erdogan in the palace”, and he said that the senators should call on Trump to cancel this visit.
