In an internal memo, diplomat William V. Roebuck raised the question of whether more robust American diplomacy, blunter threats of economic sanctions and increased military patrols could have deterred Turkey from attacking Rojava and Northern Syria. Similar measures had dissuaded Turkish military action before hence the launch of the cross-border offensive hours after the withdrawal of the US.
“It’s a tough call, and the answer is probably not,” Roebuck wrote in the 3,200-word memo. “But we won’t know because we didn’t try.”
Naming several excuses as to why the Turks might not have been deterred, the diplomat listed the small American military presence at two border outposts, Turkey’s decades-long standing as a NATO ally and its formidable army massing at the Syrian frontier. Yet, Article 5 of the North Atlantic treaty (NATO) had already made it impossible for the attack to be launched, had the US not withdrawn in coordination with the offensive.
Yet Roebuck did not refrain from serving his best-decorated criticisms against the perpetrator of acts given way to by the US. “Turkey’s military operation in northern Syria, spearheaded by armed Islamist groups on its payroll, represents an intentioned-laced effort at ethnic cleansing,” Roebuck wrote, calling the abuses “what can only be described as war crimes and ethnic cleansing.”
Efforts to sway the whole matter under the carpet came very quickly.
Morgan Ortagus, the State Department spokeswoman, jumped to defence, saying: “This administration’s job is to do what is best for U.S. national security and the American people. That is what we have done in Syria and what we will continue to do.”
ISIS massacres in America
We believe that the family members of the 3,091 Americans killed during jihadists massacres in America alone would dare to disagree, along with the 6,357 Americans who were wounded.
2013 Boston Marathon bombing, 2015 San Bernardino attack, 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting, 2016 Ohio State University attack, 2016 New York and New Jersey bombings, 2017 New York City attempted bombing, 2017 October 23 bombing, and 2017 Lower Manhattan attack.
Considering that the revival of ISIS is evidently not in the best interest of America, or anyone, the question remains still as to why the US did not even try to save the Kurds who had overachieved in liberating humankind.
