BEHDİNAN
The mountain cinema teams, which have been continuing its activities for many years, is trying to continue the efforts of martyr Halil Dağ despite all difficulties. The team, especially trying to create a language of mountain cinema, continues this tradition with the latest Berfin film.
Inspired by a real event, the film’s crew said:
WE SHOT A STORY CREATED BY THE PKK
“There are mothers and daughters, fathers and children, siblings, family members who joined the PKK together, as a family. This has effected us, there have been many events that we witnessed. The subject of the film is a lived story.
It is difficult to reflect reality and what has happened to the screen. Nothing can be impicted for the second time, nor can it be reflected. Within the PKK, we have seen stories so legendary that they cannot be repeated in history. We tried to reflect this particular story as much as we could.
There is a Kurdish family structure distributed by system pressures. We stand against this and choose the struggle for freedom; we are bringing to screens the story of a daughter left behind by her mum and her inner journey.
As the PKK, we have a history of resistance. Thousands of heroes, legends of resistance… Every guerilla has a story. We have a lot of value left unshown. These values, accumulation needs to turn into products. The film ‘Berfîn is a small window to this reality, it is a piece of the millions of experiences. I wish we could tell all our stories, nonetheless we carry a drop from the sea of freedom to the screen.
TAKEN UNDER THE AIR ATTACKS
Team members said: “The end product was created under unforgiving conditions. On one side, we were being attacked by reconnaissance aircraft, air strikes; on the other hand, there are the tasks that the current process demands from us. The scenario stage was completed in just under than two months due to the conditions of war. The shooting process lasted eight months due to constant space changes and air strikes. The assembly took three months. We had security problems on the one hand, but on the other hand, we were locked into our work. We were able to end the work with great devotion from our friends.
Most of the actors in the film are guerrillas, as well as people from all four parts of Kurdistan, including team members, none of them are professional actors. We don’t ask them to act, they choose to act themselves. Of course there is a strangeness felt about the camera at first; they have difficulties trying to see themselves from the outside, but in time they get this motivation. ”
