SWITZERLAND
On 14 June 2019, the Swiss Women’s Strike will take place with the demand of an end to sexism, inequality and for equal pay to women. On June 14, 1991, the first Swiss Women’s Strike was held in Switzerland. More than 500,000 women participated in this strike, which was the strongest action in the country. After a period of 28 years, women go on strike again, against sexism and inequality and demand for equal pay for women.
Many women’s organizations, women’s committees, trade unions and immigrant organizations are working hard for the strike. Women’s strike committees began to make press releases in many cities of the country, distribute leaflets in groups, hang banners on bridges and buildings, on women’s statues on the street, and leave a broom symbolizing house-wives.
The purpose of the strike is explained on the official page of the Swiss Women’s Strike Committee:
We are witnessing the resurgence of feminist movements all over the world: #metoo has helped spread women’s word and created a global resonance through social networks. Even though sexism, inequality and violence against women are politically correct in equality in Switzerland and the equality has been preserved in the Federal Constitution since 1981, it continues. Single women, couples, women with or without children, women with or without work, LGBTIs, young people, adults, elderly people, those born here or elsewhere, everyone with different cultures and backgrounds, for a feminist strike and for women on the general strike on June 14, 2019!
Women in the country are making calls and trying to engage in actions by giving various activities to women from every occupation group, including women working at home.
Women, not only in Switzerland, but also all the women of the world, called on 14 June that they are supported through social media for solidarity.
