On Monday, June 24 the dead bodies of a father and his two-year-old daughter washed up on the banks of river Rio Grande. The two had lost their lives trying to cross to the Mexican city of Matamoros. The bodies were located by state authorities, military and Civil Protection personnel.
The dead are Óscar Alberto Martínez, 25, and his 21-month-old, Angie Valeria.
By the images that have transpired, it is presumed that the father managed to reach the girl after the current snatched it, and put it under his shirt. However, both died drowned.
The crisis that does not stop
Thousands of migrants from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, but also from Cuba, Haiti and various African and Asian countries, have entered Mexico from October into several caravans across the southern border.
Given the increase in the number of irregular migrants and asylum seekers arriving in the United States, the president of that country, Donald Trump, threatened May 30 with imposing tariffs on all Mexican imports.
On June 7 an agreement was announced that provides for the shipment of 6,000 troops from the National Guard of Mexico to the southern border, among other measures to contain the migration. In return, the United States withdrew the threat of tariffs.
On Monday, the Government of Mexico announced the deployment of more than 20,000 troops, including soldiers, sailors and members of the National Guard, on the northern and southern borders of Mexico.
