AMASYA / TOKAT
The Association of Lawyers for Liberty (EMV) and the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TIHV) member lawyers, met with prisoners Who are on hunger strike in Amasya Type-E and Tokat Type-T Closed Prisons. In the light of the statements of the interviewed detainees, a report was prepared on the rights violations in the two prisons and the status of the prisoners in the hunger strike.
AT BOTH PRISONS, MEETINGS WITH LAWYERS ARE LIMITED
According to the information in the report, the right to meet with lawyers is being limited, this limitation is being imposed on the detainees in both prisons.
In line with the decision that was taken in Amasya Prison, the detainees of the prison are only permitted to see their lawyers on Mondays and Thursdays. In Tokat Prison, detainees are only permitted to see their lawyers one day a week for only one hour. On top, the meetings are being recorded in the form of an image, voice recording and are escorted by a guard.
In the report, the right violations in Tokat T Type Closed Prison are listed as follows:
THE DETAINEES ARE BEING EXAMINED IN THE CORRIDORS
- Some of the hunger strikers have low blood pressure, dizziness and stomach cramps
- Detainees are examined in the corridors, and they were told they will not be examined unless they come to the corridor. The doctor stated that they will not be examined in the wards because of the order of the Ministry of Justice.
- 12 of the detainees were taken to separate wards 3 weeks ago. Ten of the detainees who have been taken to the different wards, who are on hunger strike, have not been responding to their petitions since the new ward.
”WE ARE SHARP SHOOTERS” THEY THREATEN
- 12 people were taken under isolation and kept under isolation by the guards, “we are sharpshooters, tankers, we know you are eating” they said trying to provoke by their words. Prisoners are worried about this situation. It was reported that the provocations increased after they were isolated from their wards. The detainees are becoming increasingly worried about what will happen to them after they are taken out of their wards.
- In Tokat prison, the prisoners were told that they had food problems and that 200 grams of sugar was given to 9 people, despite it being enough for only one person. They state that these measurements are the amount that the doctor considered appropriate.
- The newspaper is not issued to the detainees. There is no formal decision to ban newspapers, but the detainees’ right to receive information is being prevented.
FOOD POSTERS ARE HANGED ON THE WALLS WHERE THE HUNGER STRIKERS ARE
- Although there are about 15 chambers for lawyer-client meetings in the prison, only two of the chambers are being used for the detainees on hunger strike as these are the only rooms with cameras. One of the two chambers has 100x50cm wide posters with ‘The Delicacies of Tokat’. The guards said that he was hanging these on the walls for echo when we asked.
