In order to break the heavy isolation imposed on the Peoples Leader, Abdullah Öcalan, the DTK Co-Chair Leyla Güven started a hunger strike on 7 November. Leyla Güven’s action was soon continued by the Kurds, her friends and prisoners living all over Kurdistan. Başûrê Kurdistan was one of the places where the actions were carried out effectively.
In HDP Hewlêr Representation and in Maxmur, the resistance was resumed with alternating and non-rotating hunger strikes initiated in Sulaymaniyah and Kelar. Resistance in the dungeons and the 30 PAJK or PKK member prisoners launched there death fast.
On May 14, a person from Hakkari named Merwan Memduh Özdemir also participated in this resistance by initiating his death in Sulaimaniyah city of Başûrê Kurdistan. Marwan’s resistance is the only person who has started the death fast resistance while entering his 10th day.
Mervan Mahmut Özdemir, 27, continues his fasting in the Mesopotamian Workers’ Center. Mervan said. Death fast survivor Marwan started the resistance on 14 May. Marwan started his speech as follows: In 1992, I was born in Colemêrg, Bakurê Kurdistan. I grew up in Turkey metropolises. I studied there. I have been at Başurê Kurdistan for 8 months. The Freedom Movement began in the leadership of youth. Today these hunger strikes started their actions under the leadership of the Kurdish woman Leyla Güven. This resistance grew with the participation of youth. The growth of the resistance is in the hands of the youth.
I, as a patriotic Kurdish youth, joined this action with my Kurdistan identity and wanted to raise these resistance. In this act, I will show my attitude towards the aggravated isolation on Mr. Ocalan. Youth is the dynamism of society. Changes and developments in society are developing under the leadership of youth. The place of youth in human history is well known. All the revolutions have been pioneered by youth. Our leadership has set a great role and mission for youth. Our movement is a youth party.
In the history of Kurdistan, the front of youth has been opened very little. A feudal mentality was established in Kurdistan. For the first time, Leader played a historical role by gaining a youth identity and provided a great will. If youth participate in a strong participation, these actions will be successful, they will reach their goal and enlighten the path of the Kurdish people’s struggle for freedom.
