BARCELONA
Azadi Plataforma, the Catalan Solidarity Platform with Kurdistan promoted a demonstration to denounce Amnesty International.
This followed the action that had been held in London which resulted in the injury of Nahide Zengin, who had been on hungerstrike for over 40 days and the detainment of Fifteen human-rights activists from the London Kurdish Community Centre, the Migrant Workers’ Association (Gik-Der), the Socialist Women’s Union and the Kurdish People’s Assembly.
During their three-day occupation of the lobby, the activists reported that Amnesty denied them access to toilets and fresh air. They were later released under the condition they do not re-enter the Amnesty HQ. The Kurdish activists had occupied Amnesty International’s premises in order to break the silence on the hunger strike resistance, demanding the end of the isolation against the poeplesi leader Abdullah Ocalan.
Azadi Platform called for action from Amnesty International and issued a statement in Catalan titled “Amnesty International: Silence and Manipulation” in which it condemned the decision by Amnesty International and reminded that the Kurds are actually those who defeated DAESH.
The organisation has refused to do this, though it was not hesitant in supporting Turkey’s now authoritarian president Recep Tayyip Erdogan when he was imprisioned in the 1990s.
