Enver Donmez, who is currently on death fast in the dungeons of Amed, called upon the youth to fulfill their roles and responsibilities, so that history does not repeat itself. He announced “this time, the Kurds will win and defend their leadership. Our call to the Kurdish youth is to fulfill their historical responsibility”.
On 16th December 2018, the hunger strike resistance was initiated by the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-Chair Leyla Güven, to the end of the isolation of Peoples Leader Abdullah Öcalan. As of 1st March, the resistance spread to all dungeons and reached its peak; as of April 30th the death fast resistance was launched. Enver Donmez, who has been detained in Diyarbakir D-Type Closed Prison for years; joined the hunger strike action as of March 11th, and later joined the death fast as of April 30th. Donmez has been writing about the hunger strike and the death fast actions which grow day by day.
Dönmez, who is a historical lecturer and who criticizes Kurdish youth, wrote the following letter:
“To all the democratic and patriotic youth;
Firsty, we condemn the isolation that is being imposed on the Peoples Leader, Abdullah Ocalan. On this basis, we bow down in front of the memories of comrades who are martyred for this cause. I’m Enver Donmez, born in 1990 in Viranşehir, Urfa. I was caught in late 2015. I’ve been in a dungeon for four years and was sentenced to 22 years. I have started an indefinite and irrevokable hunger strike on March 11th.
WE ARE RELIVING THE SPIRIT OF 14TH JULY
We’re going through a historical period. We are reliving the moments of the Great Death Fast of 14 July, when the sacrificial spirit of the apoists was at a peak. Physically and mentally, a large circle is formed around the leadership. Even this is a great gain in itself.
Unfortunately, however, the isolation is not completely broken. The hunger strike and death fasting in the dungeon and the outside, the resistance of the guerrilla, the people, and especially the mothers, caused a great blow to fascism creating the possibility of the meeting of 2nd May.
THE MEETING IS A THE RESULT OF RESISTANCE
Although fascism wants to use it as a specific war argument, this meeting is definitely the result of resistance. But in this, it does not mean that the isolation is broken. Our demands are certain, our actions will continue until they are fulfilled. One must not fall into the cheap manipulation games of fascism, but rather see the fault and make this clear.
OUR MOVEMENT IS THE MOVEMENT OF THE YOUTH
For this reason, I would like to make a call to the youth and to the Kurdish youth in particular. First of all, I must say that; our movement is a youth movement. It is dynamic, alive and resisting. It takes its characteristics from the character of our leadership. How could the youth standby and watch the isolation of a leadership that represents millions of people?
THROUGHOUT THE HISTORY OF PKK, THE YOUTH HAVE NEVER BEEN IN A POSITION TO STAND BACK AND WATCH
Dynamism is in the character of youth, rebelliousness, refusal, resistance. If they do not play their role as youth in such a historical period, then when will they play? In the history of Kurdistan and PKK, the youth has never been in the position of watching. It has always been active and resistant. Today, it needs to be more active than ever and join the resistance. History orders it. We will either enter the history with golden letters or be buried in darkness. This is in the hands of the youth.
HOW MUCH LONGER ARE WE GOING TO LIVE WITH THE EMBARASSMENT OF THE ISOLATION
Pursuant to its mission and character, the youth must show their rebellious attitude urgently and strike the last blow to fascism themselves. Fascism is weakened. That’s why it is so aggressive. Especially the games they play on young people is an expression of their fear of the young people. Isn’t it time to be their most feared nightmare? With thousands of young people who stand in the dungeon, on the mountain, isnt it time for the youth on the outside to support and participate? How long are we going to live with the shame of isolation of the leadership? Why not take action when you’re so close to breaking the breach?
SURRENDER LEADS TO BETRAYAL, PACIFISM TO DEFEAT, AND RESISTANCE TO VICTORY
Didn’t Şehid Ali Çiçek, one of the pioneers of youth say “PKK has taught us resistance”? Didn’t Çağdaş Kawa, Mazlum Doğan, the pioneers of the PKK, say “Surrender leads to betrayal, pacifism defeat, resistance leads to victory”? these principles of the pioneers must be followed, the climate of facism is imposing itself in a very imposing way and we are expected to take action.
YOUNG PEOPLE SHOULD FULLFILL THEIR RESPOSIBILITY TOWARDS HISTORY
Youth should now play its role and be involved in the process urgently. Don’t they see the fascist treatment of our mothers every day? Do they not see the torture of our people? They see it. Then they must leave the blind, deaf, mute and fulfill their historic responsibility. In the Kobanî uprising, they pioneered their self-managed resistance and played their historic role heroically, we expect the same sensibility and responsibility and for it to be stronger than ever. We know very well that the Kurdish youth is a heroic youth. On this note we expect you will end this silence and take action now. We strongly believe in you as your comrades in resistance.
A LOT MORE IS NEEDED TO BE ABLE TO THROW FASCISM IN THE TRASH BIN OF HISTORY,
Of course, there are young people who are on the move and are trying to do something actively. But this is not enough. This fascism needs to be thrown into history’s waste basket. The day is the day of accountability from fascism. The day is the day of taking the revenge of our party, our people, the attacks on our leadership. This was the call of Gazi Muhammad, Seyit Riza, Sheikh Sait, Nuri Dersimi to the Kurdish youth. This is the call of our leadership, and today is the call of the comrades in the death fast.
HISTORY WILL NOT REPEAT
History won’t repeat. This time, the Kurds will win and defend their leadership. For this reason, this is the call to all young people and especially for the Kurdish youth; Fulfill your historic responsibility, destroy the weakened fascism. Its this open and clear.”
